Human Papillomavirus Positive Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinomas Show a Marked Increase in PDL1 Expression Relative to Viral Negative Tumors

Introduction:

  • Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) may be subdivided into human papillomavirus (HPV) positive and negative tumors
  • The relative incidence of HPV+ oropharyngeal SCC is increasing; these tumors have an overall better prognosis
  • Viral infections often increase PDL1 expression
  • Increased PDL1 expression allows use of checkpoint inhibitors to induce oncolysis
