Human Papillomavirus Positive Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinomas Show a Marked Increase in PDL1 Expression Relative to Viral Negative Tumors
September 25, 2019
Introduction:
- Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) may be subdivided into human papillomavirus (HPV) positive and negative tumors
- The relative incidence of HPV+ oropharyngeal SCC is increasing; these tumors have an overall better prognosis
- Viral infections often increase PDL1 expression
- Increased PDL1 expression allows use of checkpoint inhibitors to induce oncolysis
